Palaka Moon Farm
Palaka Moon Farm is becoming a sustainability-oriented, experiential learning center thanks to a generous grant from Harold K.L. Castle Foundation. Our first nine of several dozen envisioned learning stations have been built. Please check our event calendar to come for a visit.
Aquaponics is a food production system that is established in a symbiotic environment whereby aquaculture (raising aquatic animals such as fish and crayfish) and hydroponics (growing plants in water) are combined.
Biochar is a charcoal product that helps soil retain nutrients and water. Biochar is the carbon rich product of biomass when wood, manure or leaves is heated with little or no available oxygen.
Worm bins are a simple, but effective composting system that uses worms (typically “red wigglers” called, Eisenia Foetida) to break down food waste products and other organic material and turn it into a valuable soil amendment called vermicompost.
A compost bin is an efficient way to make nutrient-rich soil using common household waste. Compost bins allow for control of the four factors that affect the speed of decay (oxygen, water, food and temperature) to transform the waste into mulch, fertilizer and a soil conditioner for your garden.
Chicken tractors are small movable chicken coops. They are commonly used for pastured chickens who graze on fresh grass. The tractor is moved on a regular basis (as needed for the chickens) to provide the chickens with fresh areas where they can forge, scratch the ground, and feed on bugs.
Black Soldier Fly Larvae
Black Soldier Flies are nature’s own ultimate food recyclers that have proven to be a great composting solution. They do not bite, sting, create a nuisance, or transmit diseases. The Black Soldier Fly larvae consume scraps of food very quickly (even before it begins to rot).
Breadfruit “Ulu” Flour
Breadfruit or Ulu is a traditional staple crop throughout Oceania. This starchy fruit is high in carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals and can be made into gluten-free flour. It has the capacity to provide 50-100% more food per acre than dominant staple crops like rice, corn and wheat.
Bees typically live and raise their young in an enclosed or sheltered structure. Man-made bee hives are in or part of an apiary. Beehives can be found in many places such as in a hollow tree or a simple empty box.
Human-powered generators are mini-power stations that allow you to convert your human effort and energy into electricity or mechanical energy. They can be used to directly power many mechanical and electronic devices, or charge batteries so that the energy can be stored for later use.
