Hawaii Clean Power
Energy self-sufficiency improves economic security.
Hawaii imports about 93% of it’s energy as fossil fuels - coal, oil and natural gas - to power our homes and organizations. Fossil fuels are nonrenewable, meaning they draw on finite resources that will eventually become too expensive or too ecologically damaging to retrieve. As the world's oil supply continues to dry out every day, the question of what will replace oil and other fossil fuels is becoming more and more urgent. According to the World Coal Institute, at the present rate of consumption, coal will run out in 130 years, natural gas in 60 years, and oil in 42 years. But because we know the rate of consumption has historically increased every year, we can expect those numbers to be overinflated. Around the world, researchers are investigating alternative energy technologies with encouraging progress - but the question still remains: which source(s) will prove to be most efficient and sustainable in 30, 50 or 100 years from now? Renewable energy resources will sustain our future energy needs. The sooner we make that happen, the better off we and our future generations are.
An alliance called Hawaii Clean Power was formed and is being developed to help with the transition. This alliance of local solutions providers recognizes the primary need for affordable solutions. Energy monitoring is the suggested first step, followed by conservation & efficiency, and then renewable energy. Carbon inventorying and offsetting will occur concurrently throughout the process.
Fortunately, most of the clean power solutions have associated county, state & federal tax incentives, utility rebates and/or carbon offset, energy efficiency & renewable energy financing programs. Hawaii Clean Power will also provide tips for your unique living situation to help you reduce consumption and make it more affordable to save electricity, natural gas and water.
As a simple first step, the program helps you monitor your household electricity, natural gas and water consumption and provides incentives in the form of coupons from your favorite local merchants. The more you reduce your utility consumption, the more points you will be rewarded which can be redeemed at participating locally-owned stores.
Sign-up for free and Walk Story to see your money savings and merchant rewards increase as your utility bills and eco impacts decrease.
