Long before European sailors began venturing beyond the sight of land, Polynesian seafarers had already explored and settled thousands of islands in the Central and South Pacific. As early as 300 - 400 AD, these master voyagers reached the Hawaiian archipelago in the north Pacific bringing with them not only their rich cultural values, customs and traditions but also ingenious cultural practices, technologies and science that enabled them to live in harmony with their environment for thousands of years.
Through story and legend (mo`olelo), chant and dance (oli and hula) the knowledge and wisdom from hundreds of generations was passed from one generation to the next. By learning to decipher the code embedded in their language (`olelo) each successive generation has learned the spiritual, technical and scientific principles, guidelines and instructions for everything from reading heavenly signs to living harmoniously with land, sea and air.
Some of the creative solutions to our current problems and a template for our future success and prosperity may be embedded in these ancient stories, legends and language.
