Sustainability Guidelines
There are three nested systems that comprise essential elements of sustainability: ecological, socio-cultural and economic.
Systems
Ecological: Land, air, water and energy are the primary, yet limited, resources that we use to satisfy our most basic needs of food, air, water and shelter. How do we improve the conditions of these basic resources for generations to come?
Socio-cultural: Groups of individuals are the main elements of a social structure. Though many groups have varying beliefs and values, we are all trying to satisfy the same basic needs. How do we foster the best social structure to satisfy those needs for generations to come?
Economic: Money is the most basic product of an economy. It's used as a medium of exchange to buy the things we need. The better we handle vital, limited resources, the longer we can satisfy our needs and enjoy comfortable, secure lives. How do we create the best economic structures to ensure security and enrichment?
Indicators
Nine issues are considered by many to be essential to a sustainable community: sustainable agriculture, clean energy, community capital, green building, zero-waste manufacturing, healthy policy, immersive education, responsible media and socio-ecopreneurship.
Lenses
Walk Story represents and/or collaborates with five areas of our community - government, business, education, non-profits and the community - to help identify the needs of each group as well as the real and perceived barriers to a sustainable existence.
Once the needs and barriers have been identified and prioritized, we move towards implementation of solutions through policy, outreach and socio-ecopreneurship.
